Break Into Tech Sales

How to sell yourself before you sell anything else

Read Time = 2 minutes

Tech sales has the lowest barrier to entry and most upside of any career.

You can crack 6-figures your first year, then double that shortly after.

But getting your foot in the door with limited experience is hard.

Most people approach getting a job:

  1. update their resume

  2. apply to 100 of jobs

  3. pray for responses

  4. repeat

This is backwards. You need to sell yourself first.

So whether your straight out of school or at a career crossroads.

Here’s how to break into tech sales…

Here’s a Secret:

If you want to get your resume in front of the right person, don't just apply on the website or LinkedIn then wait.

Prospect the hiring manager and do this:

(this applies to any role)

Here’s What Worked For Me:

I played golf in college. Graduated with ZERO professional experience.

But I had transferrable skills, so I leaned heavy into that during interviews.

Here were a few of my go to’s:

  • perform under pressure

  • handle rejection

  • take feedback

  • show up daily

  • manage time

  • coachable

Tell stories and share examples - hiring managers eat this shit up.

Throwback to college - yes my head actually is that big 🧠

Skills You Can Steal From:

Breaking into a new role doesn’t mean you’re starting from scratch.

Every past job and experience taught you something worth selling.

Here's a few more you can use:

Real Estate/Insurance:

  • work your ass off without base pay

  • navigate multiple stakeholders

  • build a book of business

  • handle complex deals

  • overcome objections

  • problem solving

Restaurant/Service Industry:

  • driving customer satisfaction

  • strong communication skills

  • build rapport quickly

  • quick on your feet

  • thrive on chaos

Recruiters:

  • build rapport quickly

  • drive mutual value

  • close on deadlines

  • handle objections

  • persistence

  • prospecting

TL:DR

The best candidates know how to sell themselves first.

From my experience hiring people:

  • 1000s will apply on the website

  • 100s will write a cover letter

  • 10s will DM the manager

Remember the fishing is best where the fewest go.

Until next Thursday,
