How to leverage your experience to earn extra income

This post is for beginners.

People with a job in sales who are looking for leverage off their W2.

This was me five years ago.

My goal was to make enough money to front my golf club membership.

The problem - I didn’t know where to find clients, what to offer, how to price.

In this post I’ll share an easy way to start a sales side hustle.

One day I was scrolling X and saw a post “how to make $1,000 on Upwork”

While the headline was click-baity, the content was surprisingly good.

I decided to run a search for “outbound sales” opportunities on Upwork and came across a Founder that was looking for help with email copywriting.

Here’s the messaging I used to start a conversation (save this):

Hi Neal,

It sounds like you’re looking for help generating pipeline with cold email.

I’d imagine your current campaign isn’t producing results because you’re either targeting the wrong people, or the right people with the wrong message.

I can help with both.

In my current role I lead an outbound team of 10+ reps where I’m responsible for all email copy and phone scripts which has led to $1m+ in pipeline this year.

Please let me know what a successful project looks like from your perspective and I’m happy to get started this week.

It worked.

A week I agreed to write a 5 email sequence for $1,000.

Now, the great thing about Upwork is it provides the opportunities for you and teaches you how to close a consulting engagement.

Typically, the sales process for consulting deals:

  1. Discovery call

  2. Proposal shared

  3. Statement of work (SOW)

You can use Chat GPT to help with templates for the proposal and SOW.
